Sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UV rays from the outside world. Sunscreens are classified into three types: physical, chemical, and mixtures of the two.
Sunscreen is a topical photoprotective substance that absorbs or reflects some of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UVA, UVB, and UVC rays). It is also known as sunblock, sun cream, or suntan lotion. This aids in the prevention of sunburn and, more significantly, skin cancer. Sunscreens come as creams, sprays, gels, foams (such as whipped cream or expanded foam cream), sticks, powders, and other topical applications. Sunscreens are common additions to clothing, particularly sunglasses, sunhats, and other forms of photoprotective clothing (e.g. umbrellas, etc.).
SPF and PA ratings are used to assess sunscreen protection.
